Through the eyes of the onlooker, everything that we wear says something about us as an individual. Clothes, jewelry and make-up, and even the accessories that we either wear or carry all make a personal statement which others will interpret.
Picture for a moment a woman wearing an old pair of sneakers and sweatpants. If you saw her working in her garden, you probably would not bat an eyelid. If you saw her collecting her children from school, it might cross your mind that she was very busy and did not have time to change. In most other situations though, your impression would quite likely be that she was the type of person who did not really take much care with her appearance.
Now think about a woman wearing a stunning hand painted silk scarf or shawl. Whether she was in the workplace, at the mall, taking a stroll through the park, eating at a nice restaurant or stepping from a limousine on to a red carpet, your impression would almost certainly be one of elegance, sophistication and style. She would probably strike you as someone who appreciated luxury and was self-assured enough to feel that she deserved it, and you would probably also get a strong sense of her individuality.
One of the things about the impressions that others get of us is that they tend to treat us according to those views. If the woman in the sneakers and sweatpants walked into a high-class store, for example, the assistant would very likely take one look at her, consider the chances of making a sale extremely low and be quite keen to usher her right back out of the door. If the lady in the hand painted silk scarf or shawl were to enter, however, she would attract much more positive attention, even if the scarf or shawl were accompanied by nothing more than a pair of jeans and a sweater.
Very few women have an unlimited budget to work with when it comes to clothes and accessories and, in many cases their budgets will be quite small. That does not have to mean, however, that they have to exude anything less than style and class. Worn with or over even plain, simple and inexpensive items of clothing, a sumptuous handmade silk scarf or shawl can elevate an outfit from the ranks of the decidedly average and unremarkable to those of high-class elegance – and it can do it without breaking the bank.
